Berbicara tentang aksara tradisional, awal tahun 2008 ini diwarnai dengan dimulainya sebuah proyek sumber terbuka yang diberi nama Aksara Nusantara. Proyek yang dikomando oleh Pak Mohammad DAMT ini bertujuan membuat sistem yang baku untuk menciptakan, menyunting dan menampilkan dokumen elektronik berbahasa daerah di Indonesia menggunakan aksara tradisional masing-masing. Sistem penulisan dan penampilan dokumen akan mengikuti standar Unicode sehingga diterima secara universal di seluruh dunia.

Proyek ini merupakan tanggapan atas telah dicantumkannya beberapa aksara tradisional Indonesia ke dalam daftar Unicode, yaitu Aksara Bugis (Lontara) dan Bali, dan sedang diajukannya proposal pencantuman Aksara Sunda, Jawa, Batak dan Rejang.

Deskripsi Proyek

Saat ini proyek tersebut berfokus pada pembuatan fonta dan tabel SCIM (metoda input karakter standar di Linux) yang semuanya nanti akan dirilis di bawah GPL. Saat saya menulis tulisan ini, aksara Bugis telah dirampungkan oleh Pak Mohammad DAMT, sedangkan aksara Bali yang juga sudah tercantum dalam Unicode sepertinya belum ada yang mengerjakan. Untuk aksara Jawa, walaupun proposal Unicodenya belum diterima, sedang saya garap sedikit-sedikit fonta dan metoda inputnya. Dan kabar terakhir yang saya dengar di mailing list, Diki Niwatori sedang menggarap aksara Sunda.

Komputerisasi Aksara Tradisional Saat Ini

Saat ini sebenarnya komputerisasi aksara tradisional sudah dapat dilakukan. Bentuknya yang paling sering ialah pembuatan dokumen seperti laiknya dokumen dalam alfabet, namun menggunakan fonta-fonta yang mensubstitusi karakter-karakter alfabet aslinya dengan aksara tradisional tadi. Cara ini sudah cukup memadai jika tujuan akhir dari pembuatan dokumen tersebut ialah untuk pencetakan. Untuk dokumentasi dan arsip elektronik, dokumen tersebut hanya dapat disimpan dalam format rich text format ataupun jenis dokumen dengan pemformatan teks lainnya seperti format dokumen milik Microsoft Office, Open Office, dan format-format teks sejenis lainnya. Dengan kata lain, informasi aksara tersebut terletak paralel dengan aksara latin. Dan jika dokumen tersebut disimpan dengan teks murni (plain text), maka kita harus menukar fonta yang digunakan oleh program penyunting teks kita untuk beralih dari aksara latin (yang tentunya akan nampak tidak memiliki arti) ke aksara tradisional.

Unicode

Unicode ialah standar yang memungkinkan komputer secara konsisten menampilkan dan memanipulasi teks dalam berbagai sistem penulisan di dunia. Setiap glif dalam aksara yang sudah dimasukkan ke dalam daftar Unicode memiliki titik kode yang unik sehingga tidak tumpang tindih dengan karakter lainnya. Dengan kata lain, jika kita menyimpan informasi aksara tradisional sesuai dengan spesifikasi Unicode ini, informasi itu terletak seri dengan aksara latin dan dapat ditampilkan secara sekaligus dengan satu fonta.

Lembaga yang berwenang untuk mengkaji dan mengesahkan sebuah set aksara ke dalam daftar Unicode ini ialah Unicode Consortium. Unicode saat ini telah mengandung sekitar 100.000 karakter dari berbagai sistem penulisan di dunia, termasuk di antaranya dua aksara tradisional di Indonesia.

Manfaat Pencantuman Aksara Tradisional Indonesia ke Unicode serta Proyek Ini

1. Membantu proses pendidikan
   Pihak guru dan sekolah dapat secara mudah menciptakan dokumen aksara tradisional ini untuk alat bantu belajar mengajar.
2. Pengenalan aksara tradisional ke media yang baru–web
   Dokumen yang dibuat mengikuti standar Unicode akan diterima secara universal di seluruh dunia. Web merupakan sebuah media yang cocok untuk menjadi rumah baru bagi aksara tradisional kita jika standar ini sudah ditetapkan. Untuk melihat halaman web itu dengan benar, yang diperlukan bagi pengunjung adalah sebuah fonta yang mengandung glif dalam rentang titik yang digunakan oleh aksara tradisional Indonesia. Diharapkan setelah fonta-fonta hasil proyek ini dirilis dalam GPL, fonta ini akan disertakan dalam distribusi-distribusi sistem operasi ataupun terpisah sebagai paket tambahan. Sebagai contoh penerapannya, Wikipedia Bahasa Bugis saat ini telah menggunakan aksara lontara.
3. Melestarikan budaya negeri moyang kita

Usaha untuk mencantumkan aksara tradisional Indonesia ke daftar Unicode telah beberapa kali dilakukan oleh warga negara lain. Bahkan berbagai riset pun telah mereka lakukan. Paling tidak mari kita teruskan usaha ini, jangan sepenuhnya bergantung pada orang luar. Toh pada akhirnya kita yang akan memakainya. Jadi, kita sendiri yang harus memastikan bahwa penerapannya akan sesuai dengan kebutuhan kita.

Lately I’ve been working on my 2nd plugin–commentmailer (currently in ver 0.1)–and found that it needs special i18n treatment. Unlike most plugins that need gettext to localize their appearance on the web page, commentmailer prints the localized strings into an e-mail.

Even as a non-English blog author, sometimes you do need to answer your visitor’s comment in English. More than that, if you are a true polyglot and writes your blog in several languages, you will also have to answer the comment in as many languages as you use. If you use commentmailer plugin to email those answers, you probably want to localize the email depending on the content language.

I’ve provided the localization schema to commentmailer since the first time I released it. But switching which language to use is as painful as changing your WordPress locale environment, unless you are using some multilingual plugin.

So I put some function that makes commentmailer prompt the user (blog author) with an option of which language he/she want to use to answer the visitor’s comment. It searches for commentmailer localization files inside your plugin dir and print a locale selection menu to your comment form.

Here’s what you need to do to take some advantage of this new feature:

1. Update your commentmailer plugin to the latest version
2. Use the localization template (commentmailer.pot) included in the distribution file to localize the plugin. Name your localization file (the machine object) commentmailer-[locale].mo and put it directly inside the plugin directory–next to commentmailer.php
3. Using the corresponding WordPress localization is recommended since it will localize the date format printed in you e-mail
4. When you are writing a reply in the comment form, select the language in which you are writing
5. Of course you have to write the comment content in your language to match your preferred locale

Why You Should Use This Plugin

• You’ll never know whether your blog commenters is going to visit back to look for your reply for his/her comment, subscribe a comment feed for a specific post, or choose to receive notification e-mail (if you provide one). By using this plugin, you’ll have a full control to decide whether it is necessary to notify a commenter for a new reply.
• It keeps the discussion rolling on your blog comment system.

Installation

1. Download the package and decompress it
2. Upload the file named commentmailer.php to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
3. Go to your Plugin activation section and activate the plugin
4. Well done!
5. If necessary, you can configure anything on the admin panel. Login into your wp-admin and select Options -> CommentMailer

Usage

If you are logged in as an administrator on your blog, you’ll see an additional list menu on the comment submission form. Select the commenters to whom you are going to send a notification e-mail. Then click the submit button as usual. Leave the rest to the plugin to work

Localization

There is still only one localization available for this plugin: Bahasa Indonesia. If you are interested in translating it into your language, you can use the template (commentmailer.pot) file included in the plugin package archive. You can send the translation result back to me so I could include the translation in the next release.

Localization plays an important role in this plugin since it determines the content of your notification e-mail.

To use the localization, simply upload the desired .mo to your plugin directory (/wp-content/plugins/). Your WPLANG value in your wp-config.php should match the .mo file. e.g. you should use the id_ID.mo if your WPLANG is set to id_ID.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my blog visitors use same list menu to send comment notification to the other commenters?

No unless they are registered as your blog user and are logged in when they are submitting a comment. Otherwise they would see the regular comment form, without the additional list menu.

The e-mail header configuration can only be filled with a single setting (single sender name, single e-mail address). How could a multi user blog specify multiple settings for the plugin?

You couldn’t. But you can leave it blank so that the display name and email address from the user profile will be used instead of the commentmailer option

Why I don’t see any extra options on the comment submission form?

It’s probably because your theme doesn’t have a hook called comment_form. I use this hook to automatically insert the multiple list menu containing the names of the commenters. Check your theme file for a code that look like this: <&php do_action('comment_form', $post->ID); &> Usually it’s located inside ‘comments.php’. If you don’t have one, try adding it manually.
